Thetford really is the “gateway to the east”. Our town is an excellent base for a break in East Anglia – with the forest on the doorstep, the coast only an hour away and the historic cities of Norwich, Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds just a short drive.
Thetford is on the main line from Cambridge to Norwich. Coming from London, you can get the train to Cambridge or Ely from King’s Cross, and then board a train to Thetford. Alternatively you can travel from Liverpool Street to Norwich and change there.
If you’re coming from the Midlands or the north-west, CrossCountry Trains stop at Ely or Cambridge and they also operate the service from Stansted Airport to Ely and Cambridge.
Thetford station is only five minutes’ walk from the town centre and the manned office is open from 7am-1pm (ticket machines operate 24/7). There is a waiting room and toilet facilities.

THETFORD STATION LINK
Thetford is a stop on National Express route 491 (London-Great Yarmouth) and also served by local buses from Norwich, Mildenhall, Watton and Bury St Edmunds.
Arriving from the Midlands and the North via the A14, if you leave the A14 at junction 38, Thetford is only 35 miles straight up the A11, and it’s dual carriageway all the way.
If you’re travelling via the M25, get off at junction 27 (M11) and basically stay on the same road for 65 miles! The M11 becomes the A11, then A14 and finally the A11 again.
Coming up from Essex, there’s a more gentle route along the A131 and A134 through Sudbury, or the faster A12 and A14 around from Colchester.
… and where to park when you arrive
The 11 car parks in Thetford operated by Breckland Council are free. However, a few car parks are private pay and display or have time limits, so check when you arrive.
Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam is a huge international flight hub and offers regular connections to Norwich, Thetford’s nearest airport. There are car-hire facilities at Norwich Airport, but you’ll need to get a taxi to Norwich station if you’re planning to take the train to Thetford.
Alternatively, if you’re landing at Stansted, there are regular trains to Cambridge and Ely where you can pick up the train to Thetford.
