Sophia Duleep Singh and Indian Suffragettes in Britain
A talk by Dr Sumita Mukherjee – Friday 12 July 2.30pm – 3.30pm
2018 was the centenary of some women being awarded the right to vote in Britain and Ireland – one of the largest democratic changes in British history.
Come along to Ancient House Museum in Thetford for a talk by Dr Sumita Mukherjee, historian and author of Indian Suffragettes: Female Identities and Transnational Networks. Sumita will highlight the role of Indian women in the suffrage movement, including the leading role of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, who grew up at Elevden Hall.
Dr Sumita Mukherjee will be signing copies of her book after the talk. The book is available from the Ancient House shop.
This event is part of the Festival of Norfolk & Punjab, which takes place 15 June until 3 August across various venues in Norfolk. The Festival is a county wide celebration of the life and achievements of the Duleep Singh family and their contribution to Norfolk. The ‘Duleep Singhs’, the last Royal family of the Punjab were associated with Norfolk for almost a century.
