Casualty of War – Casualty of Peace: Ways of Seeing Duleep Singh
A Talk by Fraser Harrison and Book Signing
Fraser Harrison, author of Duleep Singh’s Statue, will talk about two celebrated images of Duleep Singh.
The Ancient House Museum is proud to exhibit Casualty of War by the Singh Twins, a portrait of the Maharajah originally commissioned by the National Museum of Scotland and launched as part of a special exhibition for the Festival of Thetford & Punjab. Harrison will explain the painting’s rich symbolism and show how the Singh Twins have positioned Duleep Singh within British Sikh culture, as a casualty of history and a contemporary icon.
Harrison will also talk about the bronze equestrian statue of Duleep Singh sculpted by Denise Dutton that stands on Butten Island. Unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1999, the statue offers a contrasting account of the Maharajah as a timeless hero and prince.
Harrison will argue that these two very different, but popular interpretations of Duleep Singh demonstrate his continuing importance and fascination for Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike.
